John Gillies is a Sydney (Eora) based artist who has been creating work with time-based media, including performance, moving image, installation, music and sound, since the 1980s. Drawing on the world of experimental theatre and languages of video art and cinema, his art practice is often improvisational and collaborative.
His video work been shown at Art Basel Miami Beach, ACCA, ACMI, AGNSW, brut Wien, Espace Lyonaise, IMA Brisbane (3 solo exhibitions), MCA (Sydney), MoMA, Museo das Bellas Artes (Bilbao), Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sophia, Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (solo), National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Korea, NBK (Berlin), New Museum (NYC), QAGOMA, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery (6 solo exhibitions), Spiral Hall (Tokyo), Tate Modern and Tramway (Glasgow).
His work has been presented at the Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and London Film Festivals and broadcast on ABC and SBS television in Australia.
