John Gillies is an artist and filmmaker known for integrating music and performance into his video and film work. Exhibiting since 1980, he is major figure in Australian Video Art. His work been shown at Art Basel Miami Beach, ACCA, ACMI, AGNSW, brut Wien, Espace Lyonaise, Fundacio Itaú Belo Horizonte (solo), IMA Brisbane (3 solo exhibitions), MCA (Sydney), MoMA, Museo das Bellas Artes (Bilbao), Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sophia, Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (solo), National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Korea, NBK (Berlin), New Museum (NYC), PICA (solo), QAGOMA, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery (6 solo exhibitions), Spiral Hall (Tokyo), Tate Modern, and Tramway (Glasgow).

His video and film work has been presented at the Melbourne, Sydney and London Film Festivals and broadcast on ABC and SBS television in Australia. He is also an influential teacher having taught at the Tin Sheds, University of Sydney; University of Technology, Sydney and currently at the University of New South Wales.
